Silk pajamas are the ideal way to sleep and look stylish this winter

Let’s face it, the month of January has little to recommend it aside from it being the ideal time to indulge in a pair of washable silk sleepwear. They don’t even have to be pure silk — crepe de chine or satin the slightest amount of polyester is acceptable.

The important thing is they must glide over their body and body parts in a delightful and some might even say unpractical manner. But anyone making such a statement would be ignoring the main important point.

The appeal of silk pajamas, the reason they have been so popular throughout the years, is due to their heavy silky smoothness, slippery texture, and flowing hems, they are an item of clothing that takes us away from the humdrum.

What more can you ask from a piece of clothing that’s primary purposes are leisure and lounging? Particularly in these times, where occasions to dress up and go out are few and far between. In silk pajamas, it is possible to dress to stay at home.

It’s hard to argue that pajamas, no matter the luxurious fabric or exotic design, come with the same shocking sexuality that is characteristic of lace underwear. An unflattering shirt and pants even in silk do not always strike like a red-blooded guy that others, more explicit items might. But that doesn’t mean all men are averse to them.

I’m going to admit to wanting the wild glamorous look of a feather-trimmed pair of Sleepers I’ve seen on the Net-a-porter and imagining a gorgeously decorated set from Olivia von Halle, the Queen of luxurious PJs.

In the meantime, I’m in awe of an item my friend gave me recently, which came from the cheaper collection of silk Patra. They’re made of beautiful blush-colored cream, with fine pink silk trim, and manage to be both beautifully lightweight, but not even remotely transparent. They’re also loose but not too bulky.

I’ve been cruising at home in them throughout the past few months, displeasing when I’m required to change them out for proper clothes.

And they’re the best pair I’ve ever owned for sleeping in, emerging uncreased in the morning, unlike much of the rest of me.
